Basic forms of Hatching
Having complete knowledge about hatching and cross-hatching is
essential for every sketch artist. Hatching is important as it is used to give
a ‘dense’ look in a sketch. In this
article, we are going to discuss about the basic forms of hatching.
There are 6 basic forms of Hatching:
Basic forms of Hatching
1. Parallel Hatching:
Parallel hatching is nothing, but
just rows of parallel lines placed together. They are used to make the given
object look dense, or even used sketching shadows. Group of more lines placed together gives the
denser look, than fewer lines.
2. Contour Hatching:
In this type of hatching, the
lines follow the shape of the object, instead of simple parallel lines. This
type of hatching is used in adding a three-dimensional look in the
sketch.
3. ‘Basket’ or ‘Woven’ Hatching:
It is the graphic style of
hatching, and gives a woven look to the drawing.
4. Cross- Hatching:
Cross hatching in simple words is
double layer hatching- first we do hatching in one direction, and then we add
lines in perpendicular direction to the above layer. It adds a sense of volume
and density in the painting.
5. Fine Cross- Hatching:
Cross Hatched lines laid very
close to each other results in fine cross hatching. Here, several layers of
cross hatched marks are used, rather than just two. It also looks like pencil
shading from a distance, when finely done.
6. ‘Tick’ Hatching:
This is also another kind of
graphic style hatching, consisting of small pencil strokes called ‘ticks’.
